Acute ankle ligamentous sprain injury, or more commonly known as an ankle sprain, is one of the most common injuries suffered in sports. It involves a sprain in the ligaments caused by explosive inversion or supination. It often occurs at the subtalar joint and causes anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) at the ankle. The ankle has a complex design that supports 1.5 times the body weight in impact with each step. It can be particularly susceptible to injury in high-impact activities.
Here’s a guide on the subject.
Symptoms
A sprained ankle is easy to detect considering the fact that it involves twisting it so that your foot turns inward under the weight of your body. The experience is extremely painful. You may experience pain all throughout the joint, or the concentrated where the damaged ligaments are located.
Swelling may occur on the ankle joint and you may notice some bruising too over time.
Treatment
Treatment for a sprained ankle involves RICE (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) followed by an aggressive rehabilitation program that helps restore functionality, mobility, proprioception, and strength. A professional physical therapist will diagnose you injury and utilize rehabilitation methods such as sports massage therapy, ultrasound, and electrotherapy to help you get back on your feet.
