Arizona Diamondbacks Select Andy Yerzy 52nd overall in the 2016 MLB Entry Draft
The Arizona Diamondbacks went north of the border for their second-round pick in the 2016 MLB Entry Draft, nabbing standout Canadian catcher and SEMI patient Andy Yerzy with the 52nd overall pick.
The Toronto native, a month away from his 18th birthday, is one of Canadian baseball’s top prospects. Yerzy played at York Mills Collegiate Institute for his draft year, including stints with Team Canada throughout the season. He was also the lone Canadian representative at the 2015 Under Armour All-America Game.
Yerzy is a dominant, left-handed hitting catcher – a rare breed in baseball. His imposing frame (6-foot-3, 215-pound frame) gives him enviable power and makes hard contact; the Notre Dame commit won the Junior Home Run Derby during MLB’s All-Star weekend last season.
Devon and the rest of the SEMI team would like to congratulate Andy on his tremendous success, and wish him nothing but the best as he embarks on his professional baseball career!
