What is Sport Chiropractic?

Sport Chiropractic is a focused area within Chiropractic that involves the diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries. It provides soft tissue treatments (including Active Release Techniques or ART and medical acupuncture), spinal and other joint mobilization/manipulation, rehabilitation exercise prescription, an understanding of the biomechanics of various sports and fitness activities, physical therapy modalities, bracing, and athletic taping (including Kinesiotaping). It specializes in treating all regions of the body including injuries of the shoulders, knees, elbows, wrists, hands, feet and hips, as well as performance enhancement.

What can I expect from a sport chiropractic session at SEMI?

A typical assessment at SEMI will include a period for history taking, movement pattern analysis, hands-on assessment, patient education and an individualized treatment plan.  A treatment plan will always include hands-on manual therapy, education about your condition and a Personalized Exercise Program specific to your needs.

Please bring activewear (shorts, t-shirt/tank top and running shoes) to your appointment as active exercise will comprise a part of most of your sport chiropractic sessions.

What other services does the chiropractor offer?

Sport chiropractors can have a background in Kinesiology, Personal Training, Active Release Technique, Graston Technique, Contemporary Medical Acupuncture, Ergonomics, Manual Therapy and Kinesiotaping. Our sport chiropractors continually engage in ongoing education to help provide you with the latest evidenced-based treatment approaches.  The sport chiropractor will draw on all of these tools to help return you to sport and activity quickly and pain free.

Do I need a Doctor's referral to see a chiropractor?

No. All registered chiropractors are primary care practitioners, which means that they do not need a physician's referral to see a patient. To be 'registered', one must be licensed by the Ontario College of Chiropractors. All chiropractors at SEMI are registered, and are therefore qualified to assess and treat any individual without having first seen a physician. The chiropractor may then refer the patient to a physician if they feel a medical opinion is required. SEMI chiropractors routinely communicate with clients' doctors on a regular basis to ensure the highest quality of care for each person.

Is sport chiropractic covered by my extended health benefits?

Absolutely. registered chiropractors each have a billing number which is recognized by all insurance companies and third party payers. Some, but not all, insurance companies require a doctor's prescription for chiropractic before they will reimburse you.
