Chiropractic / Active Release Technique

How does Active Release Technique work?

Active Release Technique (ART) is a collection of different "hands-on" soft -tissue techniques that, among other benefits, treat alterations in tissue texture and tension. ART actually "cleans out" the muscle adhesion and scar tissue that contribute to muscle weakness and pain. An ART practitioner uses their hands to apply pressure and smooth out the muscle as the patient takes his/her own limb through a range of motion. This allows the practitioner to treat the muscle as it's working, resulting in smoother, healthier tissue relatively quickly. ART can effectively treat many different conditions including: neck, and low back pain, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder rotator cuff disorders, sciatica, ITB syndrome, and plantar fasciitis.

How soon can I expect results?

In most cases, following the first treatment a patient will experience a positive result. This may be an increased range of motion, less pain, increased muscle strength, or decreased numbness or tingling. On average most cases can be successfully treated in 8-10 treatments. Keep in mind the longer you have a condition the longer it may take to resolve, which is why it is wise to treat a condition in the early stages.

What about Chiropractic-is it safe?

The safety and effectiveness of chiropractic treatment has been studied very carefully. To date, no study has concluded that that the risks are greater than those for other back pain treatments. In fact, studies have found chiropractic to be extremely safe and effective in alleviating back pain.

Complications from chiropractic treatment are rare. All potential side effects and risks along with the benefits of any care you receive will be discussed.

How often should I see a Chiropractor?

Your chiropractor will discuss the need for any ongoing care with you, and it will depend on your specific back problem. For most people, the need is for immediate relief, but chiropractors provide three different levels of care.

Relief care is provided for immediate pain and discomfort. Depending on the diagnosis, your age and physical condition, one visit or several visits over a period of time may be necessary. Home exercises are also provided. Corrective care treats long term spinal problems. Because these problems have existed for some time, they may require a longer, more complex period of care, which will include a customized exercise program. Supportive or maintenance care helps you maintain and enjoy the benefits you've achieved from relief and corrective care. Continuing to work with your chiropractor and having adjustments as required will keep your spine as healthy as possible. Every individual is different, and a course of care that is right for you will be recommended. If chiropractic care is not the best solution for your specific health problem, the appropriate referral will be made. Because of chiropractic's concern for your overall well being, most treatment is accompanied by exercise, diet and other healthy living suggestions to help keep your back healthy and strong.
